Transforming a deep chasm into a thoroughfare: OSRAM Brightens up the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge
As the world's first bridge with a span of over 1,000 kilometers for both highways and railways, the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge opened for operation on July 1, 2020. Spanning 1092 meters, the bridge runs from Zhangjiagang in Suzhou City up to the Tongzhou District in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province, China. Connecting Central and Northern Jiangsu to the Shanghai metropolitan region, the bridge is also a milestone in promoting the economic integration of the Yangtze River Delta.
The Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge employs an all-LED lighting scheme, using the bridge's main towers, stay cables, bridge piers, the arch and bowstrings to carry the LED fixtures. The lighting scheme aims to improve illumination conditions for better transportation safety, and furthermore accentuate the bridge’s color-changing profile by bringing its silhouette, texture and details out of darkness.
As supplier of the project, OSRAM enabled the illumination for the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge. The OSRAM lighting scheme brightens up the entire stay-cable area and two main towers. To cope with varied lighting requirements by different areas, OSRAM has carried out precise programming for all LED RGB spotlights, providing various power options from 150W (stay-cable area) to 600W (main-tower area) with a variety of lighting angles. The installation perfectly adheres to the bridge structure, and further avoids lighting pollution to the environment.
Since the project is over water and has a large span, the LED fixtures must have great resistance to moisture and corrosion. And they must be easy to install as well. The OSRAM lighting scheme offers compact, high-performance products that meet both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the proprietor, and truly outlines an elegant and glamourous image for the bridge, adding a new beautiful landmark to the Yangtze River Delta.
